Hydration in the Desert: Why You’re Likely Chronically Thirsty

By the time you feel thirsty, you are already 1-2% dehydrated --- enough to reduce cognitive function, increase fatigue, trigger headaches, and impair physical performance. In the Gulf climate, where extreme temperatures and air conditioning accelerate natural fluid loss, chronic mild dehydration is almost universal.

The challenge in Saudi culture is compounded by daytime Ramadan fasting, long meetings without access to water, and a strong preference for sugary drinks --- Vimto, Pepsi, and fruit juices --- over plain water. These drinks often contain enough sugar to actually increase cellular dehydration, despite their liquid content.

A simple calibration: your urine should be pale yellow, not dark. If it's dark before noon, you're already dehydrated. Aim for 35-40 ml of water per kg of body weight daily as a baseline, and add 500 ml for every hour of physical activity.

Electrolytes matter as much as volume. In extreme heat with profuse sweating, plain water alone without sodium and potassium can actually dilute your blood electrolytes --- a condition called hyponatremia that causes fatigue and nausea indistinguishable from heat stress. A simple homemade saline solution (water, salt, lemon, and honey) is superior to commercial sports drinks for rehydration.
